M4 JI in Medicine

Students are eligible to take an Internal Medicine M4 JI after they have completed all 6 CORE Clerkships inclusive of Medicine Core Clerkship.

Two M4 JI’s (which can include Medicine, FM, Peds, Neuro, OB-Gyn, Psych, Surgery, EM). JI may include but is not required to include a Medicine JI. The location must be at UTHSC (not away rotation) and can be at Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville, or Nashville as offered.

Course Description

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered every block and receiving 7 credit hours.

This clerkship offers increased responsibility in inpatient medicine. The rotations offered include Inpatient Internal Medicine wards, Critical Care, Cardiology, Cardiac Critical Care, Heme-Onc, and Emergency Medicine. It counts as one of the required Any JI rotations. The student will be acting as an intern and will be working directly with a senior resident and attending faculty. They will be responsible for direct patient care including evaluating and admitting patients, writing orders, and diagnosing and managing patients. The student will be an integral part of the team/service and do all activities associated with that, including attending daily work rounds and teaching rounds.

Patient care activities are paramount, and students are expected to be an integral member of the team. Students can be based at one of several hospitals depending on the location (Memphis – Methodist University, Baptist East, Veterans Affairs, or Regional One; Chattanooga – Erlanger; Nashville - St Thomas Midtown, and Knoxville - UT Medical Center). The hospital site or attendings may be requested but cannot be guaranteed.

Course Materials
