General Expectations
Take ownership of your patients
- Interns:
- Ensure the nursing staff knows to contact you first with any issues.
- Consider a communication to nursing order with your pager/phone number
- Follow-up on ALL orders/tests/imaging/etc. on the day they result.
- Residents:
- Are ultimately responsible for every order your interns place.
- A well-prepared intern is a metric for resident competency
Be prepared for daily rounds
- All are expected to have seen the patients and have relevant updates, subjective points, objective findings, and a plan of care ready to discuss.
- Residents:
- Are expected to adequately discuss the plan of care with interns prior to daily rounds.
- For patients being discharged, Medication Reconciliations should be completed with the intern prior to rounds.
Documentation / Oral Presentations
- Lean into more streamlined documentation and oral presentations such as finishing notes earlier, oral presentations without looking at your notes, etc.
- Ideally, progress notes will be completed prior to daily rounds—only needing minor revisions based on the team's discussion and your attending's input.
- 3:00pm is the deadline for progress notes to be completed and sent to your attending.
Admissions
Delegating admissions to interns will be at the discretion of the supervising resident.
Census
Average daily encounters per intern will increase over the course of the year, at your attending's discretion
